Starbucks just introduced some new mini-treats (called Starbucks Petites) in honor of their 40th birthday! The treats include whoopie pies, mini cupcakes and cake pops. Well, I LOVE cake pops. My friend and former roommate Anna introduced them to me and we made them a few times our senior year at NYU. Let me tell you: sooo good. So, when I saw that Starbucks had cake pops, I decided to try them. All 3 flavors: Rocky Road, Tiramisu and Birthday Cake.
First up: Rocky Road.
This was my favorite. I wasn’t so sure about it since I’m not a huge fan of the ice cream, but this was hands down the winner of the cake pops. It is a chocolate cake dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with marshmallows and almonds. The cake was incredibly moist (as was true for all of them) and despite all the chocolate, it was balanced well with the toppings and not too chocolate-y. I really liked the texture that the nuts and marshmallows brought to the pop. It was super fun to eat! I ate it in 3 bites but probably should have done 4.
This Italian-dessert-inspired pop has vanilla cake, mocha chocolate coating and a chocolate coffee bean. The photo I took kinda makes it look like an eye, no? Anyway, despite that creepy thought it was pretty tasty. The cake again was moist and I felt that it had been soaked in some rum or coffee flavorings, but unfortunately no. The mocha coating helped add that needed little kick to this pretty plain pop. I missed the texture that the Rocky Road had and while it reminds me of the actual dessert Tiramisu, it wasn’t the same. Overall, this was my 2nd favorite.
Last: Birthday Cake
The only way to describe this vanilla cake dipped in pink-colored chocolate and sprinkles is SUGARY. Wow. So much sugar. A bit too much. I think it must come from the pink chocolate. The cake was plain vanilla and moist again, great cake. But it was just too much overall. The sprinkles added some texture which was good, but I wasn’t thrilled with it. If you just want some sugar, go for this one.
I’d recommend trying any of them, but obviously, go for Rocky Road if you just want one flavor. They offer the flavors at deals for when you buy 2+ but in weird combinations. You can’t get 3 at a deal, you get the 2 pops price plus 1 regular price.
