One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches is NPR Delicious Dish Schweddy Balls featuring Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon and Alec Baldwin. If you haven’t seen it, you MUST watch it:

So when I heard a few months ago that Ben & Jerry’s was coming out with an ice cream flavor for the sketch, I knew I had to try it. Unfortunately we were living in Sierra Vista at the time and the ice cream was nowhere to be found, I checked every grocery store multiple times. I even looked into ordering it online but it cost about 3 times more than the ice cream itself to ship it. I was resolved to the fact that I wouldn’t try it, until we moved to Washington and there it was!

I was beyond excited when I spotted the pint, into my cart it went to be devoured at home. The ice cream is described as “vanilla with a hint of rum & loaded with fudge covered rum & malt balls.” Just take a look:

The ice cream was delicious. I could have used a bit more chocolate, maybe a chocolate swirl in the vanilla? I say this because if you didn’t have a malt ball in your bite then it basically just tasted like vanilla ice cream. I also just like chocolate.  The rum was definitely a hint, so if you’re not a fan of the spirit it shouldn’t bother you. The malt balls aren’t super malty either, they add a nice crunch to the relatively smooth ice cream.

So the main question: does the ice cream match the real Schweddy Balls? Who knows? But I can only imagine some rum and chocolate would be involved in the classic. For what it’s worth I’d suggest trying the ice cream, at least just for the nostalgia. And maybe eat a bowl while watching the sketch.
