I don’t know about you but I’m seriously obsessed with Downton Abbey. The British TV show is FANTASTIC and I’m so glad PBS broadcasts it here stateside, since it’s just. SO. GOOD! So when I discovered this cookbook, well you can guess what I asked for from Santa this Christmas.
(The gin and calendar were just added bonuses!)
For the season premiere we decided to have a Downton-inspired dinner in its honor. The book is broken up by “upstairs” and “downstairs” food. The upstairs food is broken down by appetizers, types of meat, side dishes, and desserts. We opted for an “upstairs” meal for the first night. Since I didn’t want to buy a roast or lobster, I settled on a chicken recipe, Crawley Family Chicken Breasts with Caper Cream Sauce, and Asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce.
We were going to make some shortbread but had some issues with the dough, and didn’t feel like making anything else so we just ate ice cream. We did have some gin and tonics though (and yes, from that bottle of Hendrick’s, it’s my favorite brand)!
We are thinking of doing some more dishes throughout the season, so I will keep you posted! So far I am liking the cookbook. While I wish it had photos, it has some great stories and history about the time period.
