As part of my it’s-time-to-really-take-in-NYC summer adventure, I’ve been checking out what all Bryant Park has to offer, particularly over my lunch break. One of my favorite things that they have is Broadway in Bryant Park every Thursday. At 12:30 they feature 4-5 different acts from Broadway and other popular stages in New York City. The first time I went I saw Kristen Chenoweth and Sean Hayes perform numbers from Promises, Promises, as well as a performance by Stomp (one of my all-time favorites). This week was Memphis, Phantom of the Opera, South Pacific, Billy Elliot and The Rockettes from the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular (see my crummy photo below-I promise I’m working on my photography skills).

Each show performs 1-4 songs and it is really fun, and a family affair. My co-worker and I enjoyed watching families on the lawn, particularly the toddler boys that were dancing to the music-soooo cute! Dads in business suits joined their kids for a picnic, tourists pulled up chairs and people just sat around on their lunch break watching Broadway stars perform! Who does that? Like seriously, so cool. It also sparked my interest in buying tickets to the shows because now I want to hear more from Memphis and of course, see my favorites, The Rockettes, perform again. (Read about my moment to shine on their stage during my graduation.)

If you’re around Bryant Park between 12:30 and 1:30, go to the lawn and hear some great performances, for free! It’s truly a New York experience and you can Broadway-show shop without spending a dime (except maybe on your lunch).
